Some Useful Google Tricks

A few things you might want to try with Google:

Hand type the following prefixes and note their utility:

link:url Shows other pages with links to that url.

related:url same as "what's related" on serps.

site:domain restricts search results to the given domain.

allinurl: shows only pages with all terms in the url.

inurl: like allinurl, but only for the next query word.

allintitle: shows only results with terms in title.

intitle: similar to allintitle, but only for the next word. "intitle:webmasterworld google" finds only pages with webmasterworld in the title, and google anywhere on the page.

cache:url will show the Google version of the passed url.

info:url will show a page containing links to related searches, backlinks, and pages containing the url. This is the same as typing the url into the search box.

spell: will spell check your query and search for it.

stocks: will lookup the search query in a stock index.

filetype: will restrict searches to that filetype. "-filetype:doc" to remove Microsoft word files.

daterange: is supported in Julian date format only. 2452384 is an example of a Julian date.

maps: If you enter a street address, a link to Yahoo Maps and to MapBlast will be presented.

phone: enter anything that looks like a phone number to have a name and address displayed. Same is true for something that looks like an address (include a name and zip code)

site:www.somesite.net "+www.somesite.+net"
(tells you how many pages of your site are indexed by google)

allintext: searches only within text of pages, but not in the links or page title

allinlinks: searches only within links, not text or title

Mark unread from here - Sets the message and all following as unread so you can know where you left and continue from there .

Google calender gadget - Shows dates , location , upcoming events etc.

Google docs gadget - Adds a box in the L which shoes your google docs and enables you to customize them too.

Add a gadget from url -gets you any gadget of your choice.Just enter its url

Don't forget bob - Gives you option of more email recipients when sending email to multiple users.

Got the wrong bob - Alerts you when you have 2 or more contacts with the same name and you are sending a message to on of them.

Green robots - Adds a robot icon in front of the name.

Search autocomplete - Helps you find contacts by providing suggestions.

Hide read labels - Hide labels that don't have any new notifications.

Inserting Images - Enables you to insert images into messages.

Extra emoji - Get a set of more cool and stylish emoticons.

Hide Labels from subjects - Gives you an option to resize labels so that you can see subject.

Google Search - Displays google search results in the same window.

Create a document - Enables you to create Google document from an email conversation.

Filter Import/Export - Export your mail filters as a file :back them up .share them before deleting so that you may restore them later.

Text messaging(sms) in chat - Allows you to send and receive messages in chat(for us citizens only)

Sms in chat gadget - Makes Text messaging in chat (lab above) easier.

Authentication icon for verified users - Displays if the mail if authenticated or not.Currently works for paypal and ebay only.

Sends and archive - Displays a box in the compose form which helps you to send and save the email conservation in just a click.

Undo send - Undo send within 5 seconds

Location in signature - Appends your location in signature.

Title tweaks - Helps you to reorder the titles in your title bar e.g from gmail-example.com to example.com-gmail.

Forgotten Attachment Detector - Prompts you when you mention about an attachment but don't attach a thing.

Vacation Time - Enables you to mark your holidays and notifies you too.

Custom Label Colors - As the name suggests , enables you to set custom colors for different labels.

Mark as read button - Get your mark as read button straight away.

Go to label - Press 'g' or 'l' to display a new box to select a label.

Default text styling - Enables you to write in bold,italic and other writing styles like times new roman ,arial and others .

Inbox preview - Gives a simple grayish view of inbox when loading.

Multiple Inboxes - Add extra lists of emails in your inbox to see even more important email at once.

Hide Unread counts - Hides the count of your unread messages in Inbox,labels,drafts etc..

Advanced IMAP controls - Enables you to customize your IMAP settings .

Canned Responses - Save and then send your common messages using a button next to the compose form.

Default 'Reply to all' - Makes replt to all as your default option for replying to received mails.

Quote selected text - Select a text and quote it.You can do that with your mouse too.

Navbar drag and drop - Enables you to rearrange your items in your navbar.

Mail Goggles - when you try to send mails at late night ,It will ask you simple math problems like 7 X 8 or 9 X 4 !! So if you get high quite regularly then it can be quite a powerful tool for you .

Mouse gestures - Enables you to navigate with your mouse with cool and stylish gestures

Signature tweaks - Places your signature after "--" before the quoted text in a reply.

Random signature - Places different quotes as your signature .

Sender time zone - You are able to see time zone (time of his/her region) of senders region.

Custom date format - Allows the date and time format to be changed independent of their format.

Muzzle - conserves screen by hiding your friends custom message.

Old snakey - Play the game of old snakey (better known as snake xenxia ).

Email addict - Gives you a 15 minutes break from email and chatting by making you invisible and blocking your screen.

Right side chat - Puts your chat list to the right side of your screen.

Pictures in chat - As the name suggests ,by using this you can see profile pictures of your friend while chatting.

Fixed width font - Enables you to view message in fixed width font.

Youtube previews in mail - You can watch you tube videos in the same tab in which you are chatting by enabling this lab .

Picasa preview in mail - See the pictures right away in your chatbox when someone sends you a picasa link.

Flickr preview in mail - See the images right there in your chatbox when some shares a flickr link with you.

Yelp previews in mail -You are able to see ratings , contacts , location and much more when some one sends you a yelp link .

Google Voice Player in mail - It enables you to play voicemails that are on your Google voice account directly fron the email notification .

Google Docs preview in mail - Enables you to open spreadsheets , presentations and other Google docs directly in email when you receive any link of a Google doc.You may also open in directly in Google docs.

Youtube is a site supported by google for sharing videos . It is easy to upload videos here and may be thats why it is one of the fastest growing website ...!!! The only drawback of it is that it doesn't allow you to download video (still you can download video using real player or mozilla add on but there's official way ).

Orkut - Social Networking site by Google

Unless you have been living in a cave for past 4-5 yrs you must have heard about Orkut. Orkut is another social networking site like myspace , facebook or hi5 .It helps you to make new friends and stay in touch with old ones !!It has 90% of Indians and Brazilians and 10 % of other countries ...!!

Recently orkut modified its skin to new orkut which is quite nice and easy to use.You can now send picture scraps and use animations in your about me column.You can also put songs in your about me column but they accept only swf format . So first you have to convert them into swf format and then add it to about me.

If you are looking for girls and stuff then go for facebook but if you are looking for really awesome communities then there's nothing better than orkut.

Who doesn't know about gmail ?? Its a mail supported by google efficient and very useful .It gives a lot of space (7396 mb) which is quite sufficient for all purposes .The best part is that unlike yahoo and rediff mail , it doesn't show ads on its working page , so one can easily do the work .

With a gmail account you can log on to orkut , blogger , youtube and many more without signing up and wasting your precious time in registering for the sites.

Other advantages of gmail are -

1.) Its faster than any other mail.
2.)It provides upto 2 gb of space (still growing)
3.) It doesn't show adds on its working page .

So go for gmail if you are getting a new email account today !!

Google Chrome is just another web browser but with a nice and fresh skin . Its speed is more than mozilla firefox and much more than internet explorer but lacks add ons and stuff .! i.e. u can't run gm scripts on it .
